Using a Continuous Measure of Genderedness to Assess Sex Differences in the Attitudes of the Political Elite

Abstract We investigated the attitudes of 11,410 candidates in Finnish 2017 municipal elections who had responded to a Voting Advice Application. Women were, both terms economic and social attitudes, more progressive than men. Building on gender diagnosticity approach, we used responses attitude items construct dimensional measure political genderedness; i.e., femininity–masculinity individual’s attitudes. this investigate magnitude sex differences across parties determinants these differences. Sex were larger with economically right-oriented, socially conservative, well-off, male candidates.
